Visual Assessment Standard

Our products are made from materials that are largely worked by hand: formed glass, polished and electroplated metal, painted and patinated components. Slight variation between individual pieces is a natural characteristic of such products, not a sign of inferior quality. Below we describe how we assess a product's appearance and where the line runs between the character of a finish and a defect.

Assessment conditions

We assess appearance under conditions close to normal use:

• from a distance of approximately 1 meter
• in typical interior lighting, with diffused light
• with the naked eye, without magnification and without a focused light source directed at the surface
• in the position in which the product is used, that is, once installed

Please bear in mind that phone cameras now capture surfaces at a resolution and under lighting settings that reveal marks imperceptible in normal use. A macro photograph of a polished surface will almost always show micro-scratches, including on a factory-new product free of any defect. For this reason we assess under the conditions described above, rather than on the basis of photographic magnification.

What falls within the character of the product

Polished and electroplated surfaces

Chrome, polished and brushed nickel, brushed brass, gold, polished black. These surfaces reflect light directionally and reveal marks on any contact. The following fall within the character of the finish:

• hairline scratches and micro-marks visible only under focused light or at an oblique angle
• faint streaks and polishing marks
• slight variation in reflection intensity on curved or tapered surfaces

Painted and patinated surfaces

• minimal unevenness in the texture of a matt lacquer
• variation in the depth of patina, including deliberate irregularity in aged finishes
• isolated particles in the coating, imperceptible to the touch and not visible from a distance of one metre

Glass

Shades and glass components in our range are partly made by hand. The following fall within the character of the material:

• isolated air bubbles within the glass
• faint streaks, wave-like reflections and variation in wall thickness
• the mould seam line and the mark left at the cut-off point
• minor differences in dimension and shape between shades on the same fitting
• variation in depth of colour in tinted and smoked glass

Variation between batches

The shade of electroplating, patina and tinted glass may differ slightly between deliveries. When extending a display or assembling several fittings for a single interior, please contact us and we will supply products from a single batch.

Elements not visible after installation

Technological and assembly marks on surfaces concealed once the fitting is hung, inside the body, on the underside of the ceiling rose and in areas covered by the shades, do not affect the assessment.

What we treat as a defect

We regard the following as defects and will replace or repair the product:

• cracks, chips and missing sections of glass
• scratches, dents and deformation visible on inspection from a distance of approximately one metre
• loss of electroplated or lacquered coating, discolouration, signs of corrosion
• pronounced differences in shade between components of the same piece
• components that are misshapen, ill-fitting or cannot be assembled correctly
• missing components or an incomplete mounting kit
• any fault in the electrical parts and any damage affecting safety in use

Please enclose a photograph of the complete product, a photograph of the defect and a photograph of the packaging, and please do not return goods before we have confirmed the claim. In most cases a replacement part is sufficient and return shipping proves unnecessary.
